Don't Eat The Marshmallow Now


Delayed Gratification (NOT eating the marshmallow NOW) has been found to be a crucial common factor among successful people.


The original Stanford experiment had kids coming in, where they were offered one marshmallow now or two marshmallows later when the adult experimenter came back to the room. The squirming the kids go through while the adult is out of the room, with that one marshmallow sitting on the plate in front of them, is a window into the human condition unto itself. The kids in the experiment who held off eating the one marshmallow scored better, did better in their education, careers, personal lives.


Our kids' "marshmallow" might be that extra piece of chocolate, some more or lot more video games, time on the mobile/TV, not studying. And our own? Internet, Youtube, random entertainment, that extra pastry (every day?!!), not exercising, sleeping in a bit more, not working (??).
